Artificial Intelligence is the science of defining and simulating intelligence. It is generally assumed that man has intelligence. It is implied that artificial intelligent machines will have self awareness or consciousness, but that may not be a given. Essentially, the science of AI is the attempt to reproduce an artificial brain.
The concept of artificial intelligence is a moving target. In the 1950's it was theorized that if a computer could play chess as well as a man that machine would have artificial intelligence. Deep Blue, a machine that has beaten a chess master, is not considered intelligent, but just a powerful, fast device that can use brute force in making decisions about chess moves.
For decades science fiction has created stories about robots and generally portrayed them as intelligent without ever exploring why or how the intelligence would be engineered. Therefore, most robot stories are not about artificial intelligence, even though robots acting like humans would have to have intelligence, and even self awareness.
