Three interlocking ghost stories that, together, span two centuries. The story begins with Toby Lamb, an adolescent occupant of a house in 18th-century England. His diary, which gives an account of his tragic life, is later found by the late 19th-century owner of the house, author Henry James, whose life seems to parallel Toby's. The final section of the novel focuses on E. F. Benson, the house's third owner.
