Computer programmer Rob Lewis awakes one morning to find that he has developed psychic powers: he can both read and influence the minds of those around him. Thinking that he is in control of these newfound powers, Rob uses them to make life easier for himself and his family. He even gets his wife a promotion. But when his young twins start acting like adults, Rob realizes that he is influencing them, and other events, without trying. Horrified by this revelation, Rob decides to become a street person and cut himself off from society. Just when Rob thinks he has solved his dilemma, he gets a mind-probe telling him to travel to Outer Mongolia to learn the nature of his powers.
