King Kernac is dead, and has named his daughter Finnglas as his heir. But the tribe must affirm his choice. Some druids and warriors are suspicious of her. She must undergo seven tests. If she fails any one of them, she will die. At first, she draws wisdom from her friends. Then they begin to doubt themselves, and two of them sail off to find wiser help. Finnglas’s own nerve is breaking under the strain. Only Pangur the cat and a freed slave-woman are left to help her.
