       Additional Information

This novel was first published in 1967 by Butor, an eminent practitioner of the nouveau roman. It chronicles several transformative events that surround a young man's stay in a German castle that is noted for one of the largest private libraries in the country. The protagonist makes excursions deep into the literature of alchemy, and reflects on the theme of mimesis, or mimicry, and its role in the development of an original artistic style.
