       Additional Information

This novel begins with an account of the life and brutal murder of Michael Dalzell, a wealthy Scottish landowner. The case was never solved, but recently there has come to light a journal apparently written by Dalzell's illegitimate daughter, Jane. She is under the influence of a group of strange women. Gradually her grasp of things as they are, is eroded and she is driven to imagine herself split into several different personalities and to commit fanatical acts.
