Single mom and Hollywood literary agent Charlie Greene is still at war with her biologist mother, Edwina, whose volatile personality is not improved by the onset menopause. Edwina, on location in the Utah desert for the filming of a horror film, is appalled by director Gordon Cabot's disregard for the plants and creatures serving as background to his special effects. When Cabot turns up dead, the local sheriff--aware of Edwina's statement that the delicate desert ecosystem is far more valuable than any human life--takes Edwina into custody.
