The novel begins with the simple question, What if man chose to abandon biology all together in favor of technology? It is set in a not too distant future. The world has done away with Holeys. As Hunter would define them, Filthy humans with still functioning body orifices (Where the term Holey comes from). Into this less than perfect world comes Zac, the seemingly last holey man. Neil Corrigan is sent to investigate and then save Zac while Hunter's purpose is to eliminate Zac. Neil finds an unlikely ally in Dolores Oaks, Hunter's ex-wife. Together they work to thwart Hunter and along the way begin to question the choice of technology over biology with good reason.
