The "hand" of the title is that of Lena McPherson, the person in Mulberry, Georgia, on whom everybody depends. But Lena's feeling tired and alone, and so she and a friend perform a magic ritual designed to "call her up a man." It works, though not in ways that Lena and Sister might have foreseen, for Herman is dead, having been kicked in the head by a mule a hundred years before. Still, Herman is all man, and the physical aspect of their love merely a means for Lena to learn that she can give all she has to give and still have love left over for others.
