A mishap leaves Billy Brock cut off from his friends. In his search for a way back to the camp, he has several frightening experiences. He is rescued Seneca and her brother, Cassius, are part of a race of shape-shifters. Seneca seduces Billy and he inherits many of her traits. When Cassius is captured and the minion leader stalks them, Seneca finally reveals the truth behind the minions and their leader.
The search for Cassius leads them to Xerxes, who is also on a quest to stop Ruger, the leader of the minions. He explains how Ruger stole the control device and a power source from his people and recklessly used the technology to "fracture time" and create wormholes. His incompetence in using the device has created havoc across the galaxy. They mount an attack on the minion camp to access the portal to Ruger's world.
Meanwhile, Penny learns of Billy's affair and how Seneca's traits have changed Billy. She becomes envious and desires to have the same traits as Billy. She and Seneca develop a special friendship as Penny seeks to gain these traits. Once they arrive in Ruger's castle, Ruger's creatures, derived from black magic, constantly plague them. They have some vicious battles with Diomedes, Ruger's unfriendly ally.
Billy encounters another enemy in Pantheos, a shape-shifter who seeks the throne of Firenghia from Seneca. Their rivalry culminates in a bizarre confrontation in the castle's towers. Pantheos proves to be an unwitting ally of Diomedes as well.
A new enemy, called the Dracor, arrives in the castle through a stray portal that Ruger neglected to close. They create havoc for Billy, his friends, and allies.
After Ruger and Diomedes are defeated, Xerxes reveals startling information about humans on other worlds. He is able to undo the fracturing of time and return everyone to the night before the cataclysm. Xerxes presents gifts of new technology to Earth through Bob Smith. Unfortunately, these gifts have a price and greater dangers loom on the horizon.
