       Additional Information
The signs at the time of her birth - the blackness covering the sun and the reluctance of a fortune-teller to comment on the fate of the infant Athenais - were to be of a significance discernible later in the young girl's life. Sent to assume her position as a lady-in-waiting at the court of Louis XIV of France, Athenais swiftly becomes embroiled in the bitter jealousy and rivalry among the girls who vie ruthlessly for the affections of the King. Even in the wake of alternative relationships with other members of the court, the young duchess's determination to win over the King persists and it is this self-centred competition that drives Athenais to seek the macabre assistance of local sorceress La Voisin; a step which might have been avoided had she taken heed of the fortune-teller's words at her birth
