In the year 2007, Colonel Clifton is a happy engineer at Edwards Air Force Base. He is leading a secret project to develop an ultralight space shuttle that is code-named Skybolt. Its propulsion system is designed to extract power from a high-energy laser beam, which eliminates the need for massive fuel tanks. But happiness turned to stress four years later. Skybolt becomes operational and astronauts are dying at an alarming rate in launch accidents. Colonel Clifton has no choice but to accept the losses and continue the aggressive launch schedule. Survival of mankind is again in the balance and repayment of our ancient unforgiven debt is at risk.
