Ythnel Duumin is a young cleric of Loviatar who leaves her temple in Bezantur for the first time to become a governess for a merchant family in Luthcheq. She is accused of witchcraft in a city that forbids the arcane. Aided by the secretive Mage Society, Ythnel escapes the clutches of House Karanok, the ruling family of Luthcheq, only to become embroiled in a war amongst the lycanthropic denizens of Adder Swamp.

Ythnel and her allies finally make it to Mordulkin, where they agree to help the wizard rulers of the city depose the fanatical Karanoks. Ythnel returns to Luthcheq to exact revenge upon her one-time captors. When she happens upon the young girl she once tutored--and who betrayed her to the Karanoks in the first place--Ythnel believes her true mission is to disciple the girl in the ways of Loviatar.
