Corinne Carol-Anne Kirkpatrick (also known as
Cory) has been told all her life that becoming a hairdresser or waitress is the peak of her career expectations. She's a little more ambitious than that, but as she works the night shift to get through school, her education quickly becomes more extensive than she ever imagined as she's given a crash course in the hidden
supernatural world that lies beneath the surface of her lonely rural job as a mini-mart night clerk. Some of the supernatural regulars start showing a more-than-human interest in Cory, and when she comes to the attention of the head vampire of the local kiss, she realizes that she knows even less about the human heart than she does about her classes.
Adrian, the beautiful, heartrending leader of the local
nightlife, takes one look at Cory and sees that not only is she a stronger, more beautiful woman than she's ever given herself credit for, but also that there is a supernatural spark that resides within her heart. She is a sorceress, powered by strong emotions, and as she falls for Adrian, the two of them realize that there's nothing more powerful than love.
There are a few kinks in their love affair, however. Something in the night is stalking Adrian, killing the werefolk that feed his people, and framing him for murder. This thing has an old name, one that terrifies Adrian and sends his mind bleakly to his miserable past. The one man who can save them both is the leader of all of the local preternatural community, and Adrian works for
him. Green has a vested interest in the two lovers--he has loved Adrian for a century and a half, and anyone Adrian falls in love with, Green will love as well.
