The brutal stabbing of popular newsreader, Devon Bliss, sends shock waves throughout the country when her body is discovered in the garden of her London home. Neighbor Graham Scobie is quickly identified as the prime suspect when police officers uncover a stash of papers, clippings and photographs of the dead woman in his house and a high-profile court case follows swiftly. The media is baying for blood but with the help of seasoned defence lawyer, John Hathaway QC, Scobie is acquitted and flees to escape the wrath of the mob.
Tabloid reporters are persistent, however, as Scobie soon discovers. Trailed by a journalist to his new home, Graham Scobie is under constant surveillance. John Hathaway is also haunted by the case - now retired and living in Lambourne near Newbury he receives death threats that culminate in the killing of one of his wife’s racehorses.
