Struggling against racism and intolerance, Antronos finally manages to earn a degree in Medicine, fulfilling a childhood dream to gain some ability to prevent death for as long as possible -- as he never fully accepted his mother's strange death. He begins to gain recognition in academic circles, and becomes the personal physician to Lord Jait, the widower consort of the dead Queen, and Alaindra, head of the most powerful merchant house of the underground state.
Still not satisified with his abilities, Antronos seeks out a supervisor for a graduate degree, in which he plans to study longevity and further delay death. He finds out that one of the Professor Emeriti, Sen Vernus, is around 800 years old, and has apparently been concealing his age for centuries -- but he is clearly an expert at prolonging life. His curiosity piqued, Antronos approaches Sen Vernus, and before he knows it, is pushed into accepting a graduate position and commiting an act of murder.
What Antronos finds out much too late, is that Sen Vernus' longevity is based on harvesting body parts from unwilling donors, and he is now developing methods for possessing a new body entirely. He is extremely interested in Antronos' new patients, who hold a lot of political power. . .
. . . and Vernus really, really hates Antronos.
