Aka Painted Man in the UK.
Man has become a prisoner of the night.
Each nightfall, an evil mist rises from the ground, materializing into corelings – demons who cannot be harmed by mortal weapons and feed on anything they can find in the dark. The world's few surviving humans can only hide from them behind magical wards, praying that the fragile protection offered by the ancient symbols of power will see them through another night.
Eleven-year-old Arlen lives with his family half a day’s ride from the isolated hamlet of Tibbet’s Brook. But when Arlen’s life is touched by the demon plague, he realizes that it is fear more than demons which cripples humanity. He knows there is more to the world than he’s been told, if only he can risk leaving the safety of the wards to find it.
When 13-year-old Leesha's seemingly perfect life is destroyed by a simple lie, she is publicly shamed, reduced to gathering herbs for an old woman more fearsome than the demons at night. Yet in her disgrace, she finds herself a guardian of ancient knowledge that could offer a key to humanity’s survival.
Crippled by the demons that killed his family, young Rojer takes solace in music, only to learn that his unique talent gives him unexpected power in the night.
Together, these three offer a last, fleeting chance for the survival of the human race.
