Between the greatest of lakes and the Forever Falls, on a narrow, rocky strip of land, lies the mythical city called Hailiford, a great crossroads for travelers and trade. Though the Old Gods do not walk its streets as they once did, still they make their presence felt.
'The Clockwork Bride' introduces Xander, a missioner of Ayla, God of Romance. Tasked and empowered, like all missioners, to answer the prayers made to his god, Xander is called to fulfill the supplication of an aging craftsman who creates mechanical servants for the rich and powerful. 'An Unnatural Knowledge of Monsters' is a tale of the fiery-haired legend-killer Jink and her quest for the truth behind the legend of a deadly beast that haunts the nearby forest. Then 'Suspension of Belief' brings Xander an unusual job offer from an even more unusual source, presenting him with a mystery that leads him from one end of the city to the other, confronted with mayhem at every turn. Finally, 'The Spawn of Bretz' puts Jink on the track of a youthful killer whose trail of destruction makes even the legendary monster-hunter fearful of finding her prey.
