Jeff Williams, slave and clone of a slave, is employed on a starship caring for captured creatures destined for an alien menagerie. Yet the cloning process allows him to retain memory all the way back to when he was human. Into this unchanging life of drudgery, which is all he has known for centuries, comes a wind of change. He finds himself building a friendship with one of his captors, and as change accelerates, he becomes increasingly confused as his past begins to intrude more and more into his life. Torn between loyalty to a friend and his desire for freedom, his story builds to a climax as he comes to doubt all he once held as true. The revelations that follow sweep him along, resulting in experiences that are beyond his imagining, including that legendary state, freedom.
