	Our story opens with Duncan Collier as a boy befriending Victor, who is a vampire. Duncan-s hatred of his father subsequently grows, and he falls in love and marries Angelique. After many years of trying, Duncan learns that he is to be a father at the age of thirty-two. A fight soon breaks out between Duncan and his father over Angelique-s pregnancy. When his mother is injured at the hands of his father, Duncan finds the strength to shove him to his death. While Duncan is running away from the house, his mother tells him that she will watch over Angelique and take care of her. At this time, Victor also bites Duncan, and he slowly begins his transformation into a vampire. He learns that he was not a legitimate birth, that he was in the family by name only, not by blood.
