Sherry Austin lectures frequently on the literary ghost story genre and is inspired by the quiet supernatural stories of Edith Wharton, Sarah Orne Jewett, and Isaac Bashevis Singer, as well as the macabre stories of Daphne du Maurier, Joyce Carol Oates, and M. John Harrison. For stories in Mariah of the Spirits she has received awards for literature from the Blumenthal Foundation, and from the North Carolina Arts Council through the National Endowment for the Arts.
