Charles Butler was born in Romsey, Hampshire, UK. He studied at London and York Universities, where he gained DPhil in English and and MSc in Computing. After working briefly as a technical writer in Cambridge he moved to Bristol in 1990, where he lectures in English literature, specializing in children's literature and Renaissance poetry. He is married with three children.
