Loren Coleman was born on July 12, 1947, and he has been studying cryptozoology since the Abominable Snowman sparked his interest at age 13. He received an undergraduate degree in anthropology and zoology from Southern Illinois University and a graduate degree in psychiatric social work from Simmons College in Boston. He has also done graduate work at Brandeis University and at the University of New Hampshire. One of the world’s leading cryptozoologists, Coleman has worked in academic university settings since 1980.
Coleman’s first articles were published in 1969, and he continued on to a prolific writing career.
Coleman’s work has received extra attention with the release of the movie, The Mothman Prophecies. His book, The Mothman and Other Curious Encounters, is a study of the real Mothman, and it features accounts of first-hand Mothman sightings. He is currently working on the Cryptozoologist journal, which is about the people doing the searching, researching, and pursuing of cryptids.
