Born in 1963, Michael R. Hicks grew up in the desert around Phoenix, Arizona during the magical time of the Apollo program. He was an avid watcher of the original Star Trek series, and quickly came to love stories by Heinlein and Asimov.

He has been working for the Department of Defense as a data analyst since the mid-1980s, and is living in Maryland with his wife and two stepsons. His favorite pastimes, aside from reading and writing, are kayaking, bicycling, and spending quiet evenings with his family.
