Dale B. Mattheis was born in Minnesota near the Canadian border.Growing up as a military dependent, Mr. Mattheis led a nomadic lifestyle while attending schools in Minnesota,Georgia, Florida, South Dakota, Iowa and Kansas. It was, he relates, an amazing collage of experiences.
Writing was always of interest, but Mr. Mattheis did not
pursue it for some years while exploring other
possibilities. Moving frequently while a military dependent
had left its mark and he traveled the United States
border-to-border, north and south. While in college he
worked several summers for the U.S. Forest Service in
Oregon. After graduation he served six years in the U.S.
Navy as a Medical Officer in the Submarine Service during
the Vietnam War.
Sailing became a passion while in the service and he
explored eastern waters from Long Island Sound to Martha's
Vineyard. After leaving the service and moving to the state
of Washington, Mr. Mattheis became familiar with Puget Sound and points north in Canada. Although the opportunity to sail to more distant shores did not materialize, he continues to consider that possibility.
In 1994, Mr. Mattheis decided it was time to write in
earnest or forget the whole idea. Somewhere in that period of time, he relates, writing became a true calling. Now he cannot imagine doing anything else.
In 1996, with his three children grown and gone, Mr.
Mattheis decided to return to his home state and moved to
Minnesota where he now resides.
