Michael P. Murphy was born in 1966 in Cudahy, Wisconsin, USA. Despite being born with Muscular Dystrophy, he had a reasonably normal childhood, thanks to the love and support of his family. He's also been ventilator-dependent since the age of seven. Reading has always been his favorite hobby, especially science fiction. So while growing up, not only was he handicapped, but was also branded a "science fiction nerd!" After graduating high school with high honors in 1984, Murphy intended to study military history, but since no colleges offered correspondence courses in this subject, he decided instead to go into full-time writing.

Murphy writes while lying in bed, typing one-handed on a PC with two, Morse code keys. When not writing, Murphy enjoys reading, classical music, punk rock, collecting science fiction memorabilia, movies, computer games, Net surfing, arguing politics and, whenever possible, attending science fiction conventions. He lives in Wisconsin.
