James was born raised near White Sands, New Mexico, son of a rocket radio engineer and an artist. Among family friends were astronomer Clyde Tombaugh, discoverer of Pluto, and sci-fi writers Robert A. Heinlein and G. Harry Stine (aka Lee Correy). In high school a science fair winner, thespian, and president of Chess and Writing clubs, he became a winning swimmer, gymnast, and martial artist in college.
After two years at remote New Mexico Tech studying geophysics, he dropped out in 1963 to enter Marine Corps jet pilot training. He eventually served as a helicopter gunship pilot with the 101st Airborne in Viet Nam, where he was highly decorated, including the Bronze Star and Distinguished Flying Cross, but drummed out for smoking marijuana.
Seeking to put youthful dreams behind, he resolved to get free and discover truth. After going from the DMZ to Woodstock in 1969, James tuned in, turned on, and dropped out. Three quick divorces. Sex, drugs, rock'n'roll, and religion. Psychedelics, Scientology, Wicca, Tao, and Jesus. Folk music composer, actor, singer, playwright, TV show host, occult publisher's editorial assistant, and founder of The Scribes Of Osiris. Resolving to select a workable truth and settle down, in 1980 he returned to his home town Las Cruces NM, and worked various jobs raising daughter Nieve (politics and finance) and son Nathan (art and music). James lived several years in Las Vegas NV, where he wrote a bi-monthly Libertarian newspaper column, and played the sports book on behalf of some very rich guys. He now writes full time in New Mexico.
