  About the author

Real name: John Selby. Other pseudonym: John Selby Smith.

John Selby (also writing as B. Budd Smith and John Selby Smith) - psychologist, writer, researcher, producer - has spent his life researching the outer edges of the mind's potential, and imagining the next steps we might make into tapping our vast neurological capacities. Both his fiction and non-fiction books have pushed the limits of the potential of the human mind and the dire consequences of pushing too fast too far into certain areas ...

In his psychological and neurological research, John has helped unravel the mystery of how fear-based thoughts generate the great majority of our emotional anguish and mental confusion - and how, through psychological and meditative techniques, we can actively put an end to chronic mental habits that do not serve us. This research has led him into unique speculation regarding how we might alter our underlying experience of life, through manipulating our fear reaction and mental performance ... and this speculation has naturally led to much of his sci fi writing ...

John Selby has employed both scientific research, experimental therapeutic techniques, and in-depth inner meditative studies of the psychology of meditation. He completed studies at Princeton, UC Berkeley, The Graduate Theological Union and The Radix Institute, taking a ThD (doctorate of theology) in pastoral and developmental psychology before bombing out of all religious structures, into more adventuresome realms.

In a completely different mode, John was one of the first director-interns at the early American Film Institute in the 70's, and has written numerous screenplays, most with a sci fi edge. His seminal POWERPOINT script, and novel with Warner Books (now in reprint), pushed into the complex Mayan employment of mind-over-matter and the power of intent to influence minds at a distance.

John then took a research position at the Bureau of Research in Neurology and Psychiatry and later at the New Jersey Neuro-psychiatric Institute, working closely with Humphrey Osmond and Alan Watts, conducting mind research through NIMH grants. For his formal therapy training, John trained with Alexander Lowen (founder of Bioenergetics) and Charles Kelley (founder of the Radix Institute). John also trained with Carl Rogers in client-centered therapy, Elizabeth Cheek in pastoral psychology, Alan Watts in meditational therapy, and Aaron Beck in cognitive therapy.
