Gerald Allan Sohl, Sr. was born December 2, 1913 in Los Angeles and grew up in Chicago. He dropped out after a year at Central College in 1934 to become a journalist. After serving in the US Army Air Force during WWII (1942-45), he worked for six years as a reporter and editor at Daily Pantagraph, Bloomington IL (1945-58).

Sohl began writing fiction in the 1950s at the suggestion of his friend and neighbor Wilson "Bob" Tucker, publishing several SF novels in the 1950s. Though his interest shifted to mainstream writing after the '50s, he continued to publish the occasional SF novel.

From the late '50s to late '70s he wrote for a number of TV series, including Alfred Hitchcock Presents, Naked City and The Twilight Zone. He was also the screenwriter for films Twelve Hours to Kill (1960) and Die, Monster, Die (1965).

His best-known mainstream novels include The Lemon Eaters (1967), The Spun Sugar Hole (1971), and The Resurrection of Frank Borchard (1973). He also wrote other novels as Nathan Butler, California Indian novels as Roberta Jean Mountjoy, and Supermanchu, Master of Kung Fu (1974) as Sean Mei Sullivan.

His daughter Jennifer is currently reissuing much of his backlist on Xlibris.
